Fermí Bohigas

There are documents dating back to 1540, in which Can Macià already appears as an estate dedicated to the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine. It was not until 1933, when Joan Vives Gibert, the owner of the estate began to produce cava, although the sale did not begin until 1936. In 1939 J.M. Bohigas Vives, the nephew of the founder, would resume the production of cava under the name BOHIGAS. Finally in 1973 Fermí Bohigas specialized the winery in the production of cava, producing the prestigious BOHIGAS Cava.

Can Macià is the vineyard that the family has been cultivating for more than 6 centuries. There are 60 hectares of vineyards with a considerable height and influenced by the Anoia river. Four are the varieties cultivated by the winery: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Perellada and Chardonnay, which after a specific time of rest in the cellar constitute the treasure of the cavas. On the other hand, we also grow red varieties such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cariñena. We also grow other varieties such as garnatxa negra, garnatxa blanca, pinot noir, trepat and sumoll.

With more than 600 years of history, the Can Macià estate is considered of historical and artistic interest and is undoubtedly one of the oldest estates in Catalonia and most prized for the beauty of its buildings, especially the house, which maintains the true style of the noble estates of Catalonia. In the interior, the house maintains the antique furniture and the coatings of the time. Next to the house, there is an old chapel built in 1922 decorated with frescoes by Josep Pey, in honor of the Virgin of “La Mercè”. The property also has a modernist fountain and a small well dating from the same period as the house.

Currently Jordi Casanovas Bohigas and his daughter Maria continue the good traditional work of the Bohigas family winery, which has resulted in a wide range of red wines, white wines and of course cavas of high quality.
