Unique cellar with history and pioneers in the region
Bodegas Ismael Arroyo S.L. is a family winery located in the Burgos town of Sotillo de la Ribera, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin.
Our winemaking tradition has been passed down from one generation to the next for 400 years. In fact we have some documents from Elpidio Arroyo (father and grandfather of the current generations) which show that he won a prize in 1948 in the ‘Gran Concurso de Vinos Tintos y claretes de la Ribera del Duero’. This was a competition for red and rosé wines from Ribera del Duero. The winery also has other important documents such as a 1st Class Diploma awarded to the wine in 1902. We can also mention a type of diary where the tithes or taxes that people paid for the wine in 1787 were written down.
ISMAEL ARROYO has an underground cellar dating back to the 16th century, which has 2000 m2 of galleries carved out of the rocky ground, where the temperature is around 12º all year round and where we have our cellar for the barrels and bottles. These galleries of underground tunnels are one of the keys to the wines having a very long life, and their evolution is very slow, which is why all our wines tend to be very long-lived and remain very fresh, even the great reserves.
The winery was founded in 1979, when there was still no denomination of origin, Ismael fought together with a small number of people to create the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin, which was formed in 1982. In fact, Ismael Arroyo was one of the 6 founding wineries of the D.O. Regulatory Council.
We own 25 hectares in the town of Sotillo de la Ribera, and we also control vineyards of winegrowers in the town of Sotillo de la Ribera (the same ones for years) for the production of our wines. Our vineyards use the traditional goblet-trained vineyard system and are located in privileged lands, on clayey and stony soils. These soils are on average 40 years old, some of them even 80 years old.
